What to Wear to a Wedding (Style Advice for Guests)

August 20, 2019 | Posted in Trends, Weddings

You’ve received an invitation to a wedding at the Versailles Ballroom in New Jersey. It’s just a few weeks away and while you’ve already rsvp’d, you still haven’t decided what you’ll wear. Going over the top could cause you to upstage the bride and groom while dressing too casually could get you a lot of stares. Believe it or not, there are only a few guidelines to dressing for a wedding.

No White, Off-White, or Ivory

This rule goes for both men and women. You should never, ever, ever, wear white, off-white, or ivory to a wedding (unless specifically requested to do so by the couple). This is generally the color the bride wears and in a more modern wedding a popular choice for grooms as well. Since all eyes are supposed to be on them, you want to steer clear of those colors.

No Tuxedos

Unless the wedding ceremony in NJ is a black-tie event, male guests should not wear a tuxedo. Stick with a simple suit. The groom and groomsmen are often the gentlemen wearing tuxes and you don’t want to get mistaken as part of the bridal party.

Wardrobe Tips for Women

Ladies, when it comes to selecting your dress for the wedding there are plenty of options. Just be sure to keep it classy and don’t purchase anything too provocative like a low-cut blouse or short miniskirt. If it’s a casual wedding you could opt for a simple dress with matching accessories. For a more formal event, purchase a nice evening gown perhaps with some embellishments like jewels or sequins to give it a bit more personality.

Wardrobe Tips for Men

Men have it a lot easier when it comes to dressing for a wedding. All you need is a suit and tie. You can keep it simple with a black suit and tie and a white shirt underneath or you can jazz it up a bit with colors and patterns. If it’s a bit warmer outside or a casual wedding you can go with a linen suit, a dress shirt, and slacks, or a short suit which is actually trending these days.

At the end of the day, whatever you choose to wear to the wedding should be something you feel comfortable and confident in. As long as you remember not to upstage the bride and groom or blend in with the bridal party, everything else is pretty much a go.
